Deep Cleaning vs. Standard Cleaning: What Really Happens on Cleaning Day

We recently got a call from a customer — let’s call him Jason — who had a deep clean scheduled for his home. He’d booked a service for his 900-square-foot house with a basement and an upstairs floor, and the confirmation email said it would take about two hours.

Jason’s questions were the same ones we hear all the time:

  • “Is two hours realistic for a deep cleaning?”
  • “Is it really just one cleaner for the whole house?”
  • “Do I need to provide supplies?”
  • “What’s the difference between this deep clean and future standard cleanings?”

We walked him through everything on the phone, and that conversation is a perfect example of how deep cleaning and standard cleaning really work — how long they take, what’s included, and how to keep your home looking great afterward.

How Long Does a Deep Cleaning Really Take?

When Jason called, he was looking at a 900 sq. ft. space with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, split between an upstairs and a basement living area. Our system estimated about two hours for a deep clean, with one of our top crew members assigned.

Here’s how we think about time estimates:

  • Under 1,000 sq. ft. with average buildup: usually 2–3 hours for a deep clean.
  • 1,000–2,000 sq. ft.: often 3–5 hours, sometimes with a two-person team.
  • Over 2,000 sq. ft.: typically a two- or three-person crew to keep things efficient.

One thing Jason was relieved to hear: our deep clean pricing is by the job, not the hour. So if we estimate two to three hours and it takes a bit longer, you’re not hit with surprise charges. We stay until the deep clean checklist is completed to our standards, not until the clock runs out.

What’s Actually Included in a Deep Clean?

Jason had booked a deep clean as a “reset” before possibly moving to a monthly maintenance plan. That’s exactly what a deep clean is for: tackling the built-up grime so regular standard cleanings can be quicker and more affordable.

While details can vary a bit from home to home, a typical deep cleaning includes:

Kitchen Deep Clean

  • Exterior of all appliances cleaned (stove, fridge, dishwasher, microwave)
  • Inside of microwave cleaned thoroughly
  • Cabinet fronts wiped and degreased
  • Countertops disinfected and items lifted to clean underneath
  • Sink scrubbed, faucet polished, and backsplash wiped
  • Baseboards and floor edges detailed, floors vacuumed and mopped

Bathroom Deep Clean

  • Showers and tubs scrubbed to remove soap scum and buildup
  • Toilets sanitized inside and out, including base and behind
  • Sinks, faucets, and counters disinfected
  • Mirrors and glass polished streak-free
  • Cabinet fronts wiped; fixtures and towel bars detailed
  • Floors scrubbed and mopped, including corners and around the toilet

Living Areas & Bedrooms

  • All reachable surfaces dusted (including window sills, ledges, and decor)
  • Thorough dusting of furniture, TV stands, and nightstands
  • Baseboards, door frames, and light switches wiped
  • Floors vacuumed and/or mopped, including under movable furniture
  • Trash emptied throughout

On Jason’s call, we also explained the final walkthrough. When we’re done, we invite you to walk through the home with us so you can point out any missed spots (“Could you get the top of this shelf?”) while we’re still there. That way you know the deep clean was done to your expectations.

Deep Clean vs. Standard Clean: What Changes Next Time?

Once Jason’s deep clean was booked, he asked about a monthly “subscription” if everything went well. That’s when we recommended what we almost always suggest: start with a deep clean, then switch to recurring standard cleanings.

Here’s the basic difference:

  • Deep cleaning = the big reset. We focus on buildup, corners, and details that haven’t been touched in a while.
  • Standard cleaning = maintenance. We keep those now-clean areas from getting dirty again.

On a standard cleaning visit, we’ll still:

  • Dust surfaces and furniture
  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms and kitchen surfaces
  • Vacuum and mop floors
  • Empty trash and tidy common areas

But we won’t need to spend as much time scrubbing heavy buildup, degreasing cabinet fronts, or detailing baseboards every single time — because the deep clean already took care of that.

Do You Need to Provide Supplies or Prep the House?

Jason also asked if he needed to provide anything: “Do you guys bring your own supplies, or do we?” For us, the answer is simple: we bring our own supplies and equipment. That includes:

  • Professional-grade cleaning solutions
  • Microfiber cloths and scrub brushes
  • Vacuum, mop, and other tools

What we ask from you is minimal:

  • Be home (or arrange access) at the start of the appointment.
  • Pick up personal items or clutter where possible so we can focus on cleaning, not organizing.
  • Let us know about any special surfaces or priorities (for example, “skip this room” or “focus more on the bathrooms”).

How to Maintain Your Home After a Deep Clean

Once your deep clean is done, the goal is to keep your home feeling that way as long as possible. For Jason, we recommended a monthly standard cleaning, but there are things you can do between visits to stretch that fresh, clean feeling:

Simple Weekly Habits

  • 5-minute nightly reset: Put dishes in the dishwasher, clear counters, and do a quick pickup of living areas.
  • Bathroom touch-ups: Keep a disinfecting wipe container under the sink and wipe counters and faucet handles a couple of times a week.
  • Entryway control: Use a shoe mat and a small basket for keys and mail to stop clutter at the door.

When to Consider Recurring Cleaning

If any of these sound familiar, recurring standard cleanings can make a huge difference:

  • You feel like you’re always “catching up” on cleaning.
  • Bathrooms and the kitchen get away from you faster than you’d like.
  • You’d rather spend your limited free time on anything but scrubbing.

That’s exactly why we told Jason we’d follow up after his deep clean — not just to offer a subscription, but to get honest feedback and see what kind of maintenance schedule would fit his home and budget.

If you’re unsure whether you need a deep clean first or can jump straight into standard maintenance, just ask. We’re always happy to walk through your square footage, layout, and goals so you know exactly what to expect in terms of time, price, and results.
